OKay... I am finishing up this production album and I think it will get signed. I have some sweet shows already lined up for June and July and it's 12 tracks fully produced... and I mean WELL produced because I am a fucking snob about production.
What labels should I consider trying to pick me up?
The obvious ones have been Subpop and Morr music. However, Subpop is a bunch of bitches and don't return any emails sent to their main address (so it has been hard to contact them because I have to go through friends of friends). Morr music is german... so I would ideally want to get signed on something domestic because... well -- I'm definitely 'indie-american' sounding.
So what labels might I try to contact with promo kits? NYC labels I might not have considered? Anywhere else?
The music sounds a bit like if you took the postal service than crossed it with warp records (aphex twin, squarepusher, plaid)... then a dash of Air and/or Mum... and a bit of Morrisey for the vocals... I dunno. Everybody has responded well to it and I think it will sell... but I have to find the appropriate label and make sure they come to my shows.
Any help appreciated!!!
P.S. People from Captial records are already going to come to one of my shows and I don't want to sell out with them... so this is almost a plea for help from the indie world!!!!

Re: Labels?
Fri, May 27, 2005 - 4:35 PMMostly just distribution.
I want to make sure my album is in stores... If a label were to make copies and get it in stores, I could probably get articles in publications myself. I would enjoy help with promotion, but I actually think I could do most of that myself.
I don't want to try and self distribute my album... I am not a business man and that would be a pain in the ass. Also, I'm really really confident that this project will SELL extremely well... so if said label hears it they should think to themselves
'Wow... we can easily make money by helping this guy sell his records.' -

this company is the parent company for emusic.com... which specializes in online distro for indie labels.
they can get you all set up with the online service... AND... they do physical CD distribution as well... AND... it's all non-exclusive... so you retain all your rights.
I'm not trying to sway you... just presenting this to you as an option... I'm considering it myself... but right now... I have 1000 copies of my CD sitting in my hallway... and I don't know what to do with them... so I feel you on having someone else handle promotion and distribution... -

Fri, May 27, 2005 - 4:52 PMhmm... thanks :) I'll take a look...
I might start with having my tracks up for sale online and then try to get more established labels to sign me based on that stuff.... hmmm.... -

Fri, July 28, 2006 - 11:57 PMhave read "CD Baby" is pretty good
and that they link you to the iTunes music store, which is very popular
(may try it for my next album, when it's ready)
